How to Overcome Fear of Failure and Start Pursuing Your Dreams
Do you have a dream that's been nagging at you for years? Are you pursuing it? Or are you held back by fear of failure? So many women I talk to are stuck in this holding pattern, not sure what to do next with their lives. They have all these big dreams and aspirations, but they're afraid to take the leap and actually pursue them. Why is it that we're so afraid of failure? What's really at stake if we don't try? In this blog post, I want to discuss how to overcome fear of failure and start pursuing your calling.
Acknowledge that fear is normal and natural
Fear is a natural response to anything new or unknown. It's what keeps us safe and helps us avoid danger. So it's normal to feel a little bit of fear when you're contemplating making a big change in your life. But you need to be careful not to let fear overpower you and prevent you from taking action. It can hold you back from actually living your life to the fullest.
Remind yourself that everyone feels fear at some point in their lives. Even the most successful people have had to deal with it. They just didn't let it stop them from pursuing their dreams. So don't let it stop you either.
Recognize that you have a choice. You always have a choice in how you respond to fear. You can either let it control you or you can choose to overcome it. It's up to you. When you're feeling afraid, remind yourself that you are in control of your life and your destiny; no one else is. You get to decide what you do with your life. So don't let fear make that decision for you.
Challenge your fears
Are your worries truly well-founded? Do you think they'll come true? I'm confident that, when you take some time to think about this more carefully, you'll realize there are numerous things in your life that you've worried about but have never come true. You catastrophize, putting yourself in the worst-case scenario rather than thinking logically.
When you're feeling this way, it can help to put your fears into perspective. Write them down and then ask yourself how likely it is that each one will come true. You may find that most of your worries are unfounded and that you're able to let them go.
If you still feel stuck, try challenging your beliefs about failure. What does failure really mean to you? What are the consequences of failing? And again, you may find that your beliefs are exaggerated and that you're able to let go of some of your fears if not all of them.
Cultivate courage
There's no getting around it – in order to overcome fear of failure and start pursuing your dreams, you'll need to take some courageous risks. This might mean making a commitment to yourself to take action, and then following through on that commitment.
The important thing is to keep moving forward and approach things in a new way. Shifting out of the old patterns is definitely essential for growth. When you're ready to take that next step, remember that you have the power to make things happen. Sooner or later, you'll find that the courage you need will come naturally, and you'll be able to accomplish more than you imagined in the beginning. Just keep moving towards your goals, one brave step at a time. Dare greatly!
Fear regret more than failure
Recognize that you have not failed until you have quit. As long as you are still trying, even if what you are doing is not working, then it is simply an indication that you need to try something else. Use the experience as an opportunity to learn what does and doesn’t work, so that you can eventually find a path to success.
Setbacks happen to everyone. Recognize that everyone experiences them; even people who appear successful have had their share of failures. The key is not to let the setback define you or your future endeavors. Learn from it and move on.
Finally, remember that taking action is always better than staying passive. If you don't try, you'll never know what could have been. One of the biggest regrets people have is not trying. They regret not taking the chance and not seeing what could have been. So don't let that be you. Don't regret not trying. Take the chance, go after what you want, and see what happens. Don't let fear hold you back from living the life you want.
