You’re Not Alone in Your Self-Doubt
"What if he found out I’m not as competent?" This is the question she asks herself while sitting in front of her boss during a performance review meeting. Her work speaks for itself and it's clear that he has nothing but praise for her accomplishments, yet there are still those thoughts floating around inside her head - the ones where maybe she isn't doing enough or doesn’t have what it takes to keep up with everything going on around here... ‘I can't help but feel undeserving. Like, how could he not have noticed anything?’
She had been feeling increasingly anxious and inadequate at work for some time, but it seemed like nothing she did would help. She desperately wanted to let go of self-doubt. However, the thought felt so difficult that even though there were times when other things began working out marginally better than before, they never lasted long enough or produced any real sense of joy in her life - just an ever-present low level of discontent fueled by frustration.
These challenges and feelings are rather more typical among accomplished women than is generally recognized. The female brain is not taken into consideration when it comes to emotional control or perception of the world. This causes many women to struggle with job duties, especially if they hold high positions. For example, 75% of female executives across industries have felt like a fraud in their careers according to a study.
The reason for this situation can be traced to when our neurological differences were not properly studied. Most knowledge about how male vs female brains work came from research done on males alone. This means that the differences such as female larger limbic systems (our emotional control centers) or female inferential perceptions of the world were not analyzed. They did not evaluate how female hormones affect our cognitive abilities and feelings either, and they did not discuss the intergenerational transmission of unresolved emotions.
To put it another way - it might be tough to think about using an Android phone with Apple's iOS!
I understand that getting rid of self-doubt may appear to be a difficult task. It can't be simplified into just thinking happy thoughts and taking deep breaths. Yet, there's a tool that considers how different women are from men since we need something special for our female neurology! We can talk about that, but I'm here today with some ideas of what you could do when those feelings come back again.
When you feel these emotions intensely, I suggest that the following four questions be asked:
- What am I DOING at this moment?
- What are my THOUGHTS at this particular moment?
- How does it make me FEEL right now?
- Is there anything that can be DONE to lessen or eliminate the intensity of those emotions?
This can help you feel more peaceful for a short time, but to release an emotion or belief, we must first deal with its originating cause.
This is where the tool I use helps and works.
